On Saturday the 3rd of December some of us drove to Skövde to train for a full day. It was Anders Pettersson, since he also is shibu-chō for Skövde shibu has to hold gradings and teach a bit, and two additional members from the branch, Daniel Wallberg and Simon Flodin, who went to Skövde this December Saturday.

Erik and Pelle with their medals
On Saturday November 19 there was the Swedish national taikai in Shorinji Kempo. From Karlstad we had Pelle Svensson and Eric Öhrn entering the yūdansha (black belts) category and they placed themselves in third place. Apart from Embu competition, it was also an all-day training for all who didn’t enter the competition.
Both the competition and the training was held in Lijeholmshallen in Stockholm. The competition was divided into two categories, one category of yūdansha (those who have a black belt) and one category for kyūkenshi (those who do not have a black belt). Continue reading
On Tuesday the 8th of November we had a kyū grading where Magnus Englund graded to nikyū (2 kyū, blue belt). Magnus passed his test without any problems.

To tie the obi (belt) is often difficult for new members, we have therefore put up some pictures here of the most common way to tie the belt in Shorinji Kempo. Click on the images to see a larger version.
During practice dōgi should be used.
Colour of dōgi shall be white and have breast badge embroidered. Sodeshō (sleeve badge) that indicates branch and possibly function/rank shall be on the left side, the lower part of the arm badge should meet the seam of the sleeve.
Name shall be on the back side of the collar of the dōgi, on the lower part of the front of the dōgi (extension of the collar) and close to the upper part of the dōgi trousers.
Sleeves of the dōgi should not be rolled up and the length should be between elbow and wrist.
Lower part of the dōgi trousers shall be between ankle and knee.
When wearing underwear under dōgi, it must be worn so as not to be visible, use a white t-shirt.
Use a correct obi (belt, varies depending on rank), do not use an obi that are miscoloured or unnecessary worn.
Feet shall be bare if not special circumstances require different.
Dōgi・道衣NameShould be on the backside of the dōgi collar, lower part of the front of the dōgi (extension of the collar) and close to the upper edge of the dōgi trousers. SleevesThe length of the sleeves should be between the elbow and the wrist. TrousersThe length of the trousers should be between the knee and the ankle. |

For children there are sleeve badges indicating rank, bukai sodeshō, the color of the chevrons is the same as the color of the belt for that degree, and the number of chevrons indicate the level of that belt color. Continue reading
All kenshi should have a sodeshō (sleeve badge) on their dōgi (training suit) which indicates the branch name (or country), organizational affiliation, and to some extent, degree. In Sweden we use branch name, which also is done in Japan and many other countries, however many countries have chosen to have country name on their badges. Continue reading

Daniel Wallberg graded to yonkyū
Today we had a kyū grading where Daniel Wallberg graded to yonkyū (4 kyū, yellow belt). Daniel did really well and passed the test without any problems.

On the 8th of October the Swedish Federation arranged, for the fifth time, a training day for everyone who has sandan (3 dan) or higher. The Federation is sponsoring all from outside Stockholm with travel cost and there is no fee to participate. From Karlstad shibu our shibu-chō, Anders Pettersson, and Mansur Mirtorabi both participated.
The format of these seminars has been to share and exchange experience, give each other tips on different exercises, etc., but above all an opportunity to practice techniques for higher levels together with others on the same level.
