How to tie obi (belt)

To tie the obi (belt) is often difficult for new members, we have therefore put up some pictures here of the most common way to tie the belt in Shorinji Kempo. Click on the images to see a larger version.

Start by taking the middle of the belt at the center front. The belt will go around two turns, tuck one end under the other on the back. When the belt goes two times around, it looks like this. Tuck the end of the outer turn in under the two turns and pull it up.

The end that now is pointing downwards forming a loop and is tucked down between the two turns of the belt. Grab the other end ... ... and tuck it in the loop between the two turns. Tighten the belt and it will fit nicely.

There are also some variations in how to tie the belt, the above is the way that is most common in Shorinji Kempo, but that does not mean that other ways are wrong.

Here are also a couple of video clips, from two different views, on how to tie your belt.
